Traditionally,
label printing has been done on big flexographic machines.
This involved outputting artwork to film in order to
create flexographic plates. Then plates were made and
loaded on to the machine and the machine was calibrated.
All before you can print a label. Digital printing changes
all this. It brings label printing in to the 21st
century.
There
are four main advantages that digital label printing has
over traditional flexographic label printing:
-
Speed –
with no plates to create, and very little setup
of the machine, a job printed on a digital printer can
be printed in minutes not hours. Most flexographic
presses take several hours to set up a four color
process job, our press is ready to go immediately. We
can have 4 or 5 jobs out the door while the old style
press is still being setup.
-
Quality –
if you want high resolution and vibrant colors then
you need digital printing. Our HP-Indigo press can
print at 230 line screen, whereas most flexographic
printers print at 133 line screen or 150 at the most.
You can really see the difference in detail and color.
If you are selling product labels at retail, you
really should consider digital printing just for the
quality.
-
Cost –
because there are no plates to create, no
film to output and minimal machine setup, fixed
costs are very low. So if you want to print a small
number of labels you will always get a better price
with digital printing. This way you only order what
you need, rather than a huge number to get the best
price.
-
Flexibility
– digital printing’s greatest power is its
flexibility. You can print 1,000 labels and every
label can be different. That’s right, complete
variable data printing. Whether you want to print
names from a database, consecutive numbering, multiple
barcodes, or just several versions of the same label,
digital printing can handle it with ease.
